I have learned that the one leaning towards divorce is often dealing with deep and complex ambivalence. Old resentments and anger co-exist with feelings of failure and guilt about hurting others. Emotionally exhausted, they may have considered divorce for a while, believing they have tried everything to save the marriage.

I have learned that the person wanting to preserve the marriage is often dealing with overwhelming anxiety, hurt, and a sense of panic about the impact of divorce on themselves and family members. They regret not addressing issues sooner or better, but hold onto hope, believing they are willing to do anything to preserve the marriage.

I have been working with couples since 2012.
