I have learned that the one leaning towards divorce is often dealing with emotional exhaustion & a concern about sending mixed messages. They have probably thought long & hard about the decision to end the marriage, yet still ambivalent about doing so. Couples therapy is unappealing, but giving up seems wrong.
I have learned that the person wanting to preserve the marriage is often dealing with hurt, fear, anger - and perhaps resentment that their spouse is making a unilateral decision that impacts so many people. The leaning in spouse often vacillates between wanting to do anything to save the marriage and needing to have their side heard.
I have been working with couples since 1994.
