I have learned that the one leaning towards divorce is often dealing with feeling frustrated that their partner won't listen or just doesn't get it, resulting in fear and sadness as they consider ending the marriage when they would often prefer not to have to. And, of course, anxiety about the impact on any children..
I have learned that the person wanting to preserve the marriage is often dealing with surprise and confusion -- I don't understand - how did things get this bad? There is often fear about a possible loss of control regarding their future. They often feel betrayed and angry. And they also worry about any children they share..
I have been working with couples since 1996.
